Michelle is like Sporty Spice! And at the age of 15, she met Stephen on a football pitch out in Caragh. Michelle was playing on the lads U/15 football team at the time. But it wasn’t unil their leaving cert that they got together, sharing lunch breaks! 10 years later they got engaged. They wanted a country house style wedding and chose Rathsallagh House Hotel. They decided to incorporate a woodland theme, taking inspiration from all the beautiful trees at Rathsallagh.
Michelle got ready in her parents house in Caragh, along with the family, her sisters Golden Retrievers Charlie and Sammy and also the canary “The Bird” who loves to sing!
The boys couldn’t resist teasing Stephen about his dad’s 1992 Toyota Starlet, which he bought in 1997 on the Isle of Man. It only has 147,000 kms on it – so still going strong! But Michelle chose a fancy mercedes to arrive to the church in Caragh, while the bridesmaids rode in a vintage bus. Fr Joe was the celebrant, and Michelle had told me as a child she had been a server in the church. It was very personal when one of her bridesmaids came up and sang during communion. After the ceremony, Michelle and Stephen clambered on board the vintage bus for a glass of bubbly before heading off to Rathsallagh.
The gardens looked stunning with all the autumn colours especially the red ivy on the outside of the house. We wandered around all the grounds getting photos with the lovely Eugene Whelan keeping us company doing their video. We explored the garden, woodland and even the tennis court before it started to drizzle and we headed into see the main room. The cake was three tiers of biscuit, red velvet and lemon madeira. The super candy cart was made by Stephen’s dad and neighbour and was filled with lots of yummy sweets for later. Michelle had even brought back safely from New Zealand a canvas painting of a tree which her work friend had done. All the guests could put their fingerprints on it.
We left the newleyweds to enjoy a drink with the bridal party before heading in for dinner. We hear they are going on a road trip for a week with the New Zealanders and have created a facebook group for everyone to meet up in Galway to climb Croagh Patrick. No sitting on the beach for this sporty couple!
